How To Pack Fragile Items For Shipping

Fragile Items

When you plan to move cross country, one of the challenges you have to face is packing. More so, if you have a lot of expensive items or items of enormous sentimental value. Instead of selling these items, you may want to bring them for your move. Packing for your move requires careful planning to avoid breakages, particularly for fragile items like vases, crafts, and other decorative or collectible items. Here are some tips for packing your delicate items:

Choose The Correct Box

When you are packing your delicate items, the trick is to choose the right box. When you have a box that is too big, the items inside will have more space to move. This movement can result in breakages. It is also much more expensive to ship because some movers will charge shipping fees based on the size of the box. Ideally, you should choose a box that allows only about two inches of extra space on all sides. This space is enough to keep your fragile items snug and secure inside without you paying more for shipping.

Before you have your mover pick up the items, you should measure them. When you pack your items, your thinking should also include safety for removing your items out of the box.

Pick The Right Materials

Of course, your box should be made of high-quality materials. Putting your items in flimsy boxes also increases the chance of it breaking, especially since some of the things made from glass may be too heavy for the box to hold. Getting a heavy-duty box, with a thickness of at least ⅛ inches, would be ideal.

Use Bubble Wrap

It is mandatory to use bubble wrap as protection for breakable items. Bubble wrap can provide the cushion to prevent your breakables from nicks and dents during transport. Some would say that packing is a form of art. It takes expertise to make it right; that’s why some would even hire professionals to do their packing. Here are some reminders when packing fragile items with bubble wrap:

  • Fill empty spaces with bubble wrap. Holes should be filled with crumpled paper.
  • Breakables should have paper layers or carton linings.
  • Add bubble wrap, ensuring all parts of the items are covered.
  • Secure the wrapper with packaging tape.

Fill The Box

Packing fragile items means limiting the movement of your items inside. So, before you even put in your item, make sure that the bottom of the box has enough cushion. Pad it with bubble wrap, peanuts, or crumpled paper. Put in your item. Do the padding on all sides of the box and top of the item before sealing it.

Once you’ve filled out the box, test if the items inside have any movements. If there is, fill in with more padding. But, make sure that the flaps can close properly with no bulges. If there is little to no movement at all, you can now finalize sealing your box. When you are ready to ship out your item, don’t forget to remind your courier to paste a fragile sticker on the box, so their staff will know that there are breakables inside the box. You can also write “Handle with Care” or “Breakables Inside” as a gentle reminder that they should not throw your box around.

Choose The Right Shipping Company

We cannot stress this enough. Your courier is your partner for moving your items, and you should go with the one that places high importance for your items – even if they are not breakables. Going with a trusted courier is best, so you can ship your breakables without worry.

Packing fragile items means that you have to invest in using the right materials, the right method of packing, and the right courier.
